Food Protection: Food Safety and Food Defense Strategies for Reducing Costs Growing Your Business Resources

Food Protection & Safety

Food contamination is a growing problem. When food is tainted, the first questions are “Which products?” “Who made them?” “Where were they sold?” Contaminants in food put lives at risk and can force a company into bankruptcy in the blink of an eye. The ability to trace products and ingredients back to their source and forward through the supply chain is as critical to the well being of consumers as it is to manufacturers.

Regulations and guidelines safeguard our food supply and typically fall into two categories: food “safety” concerns accidental contamination, while food “defense” concerns intentional contamination. In addition, several agencies are charged with regulating food and in some cases, products may fall under more than one agency’s jurisdiction. It is imperative to be able to determine which agency is responsible for your products and what laws apply.

Strategies to Reduce Costs

Real estate, energy, waste management, water, and expansion or relocation costs make New York City one of the most expensive places to do business.City, state and federal agencies offer numerous incentives to manufacturers in order to help them overcome this hardship, including grants, tax abatements and other assistance programs. Assessments are often required in order to establish need and take advantage of these programs but they are frequently provided at low-cost or are partially funded by government agencies. Upgrades to lighting, motor, insulation, equipment and heating or cooling systems can also increase energy efficiency and create savings. Utilizing lean manufacturing techniques is another good way to reduce costs.
