On Thursday, June 16, 2011, the NYC EnergyTech 2011 Conference: Energy + Money, took place in lower Manhattan. Hosted for the second year by ITAC, the conference informed manufacturing and technology companies how to win and keep business with the federal government.
Kicking off the day, Matthew Herdman and Anthony Faugno of EisnerAmper detailed the strict accounting standards required by the federal government. Companies accustomed to traditional accounting practices, often overlook the more stringent government accounting standards when they apply for grants or even after they are awarded a grant. Mr. Herdman and Mr. Faugno successfully played off each other during their presentation, all while fielding questions from the lively and engaged audience.
After a lunch and networking break, the Conference continued with a presentation from Marcene Sonneborn, SBIR and Business Development Specialist at Central New York Technology Development Organization (CNYTDO). She spoke about the opportunities and requirements related to SBIR and STTR funding. CNYTDO is the designated Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center for Central New York.
Benjamin "Pietro" Filardo of Pliant Energy Systems, a recent Department of Defense SBIR awardee, and Manny Papir of AquaSol, wrapped up the day. Mr. Filardo spoke about his company's experience with the SBIR applications, bringing the complex process down to a personal and relatable level. Pliant Energy Systems is developing novel technologies to extract energy from moving water. Mr. Papir spoke about his experience as a New York City EnergyTech company, specifically how ITAC’s FastTrac TechVenture class helped him with several tough business decisions. AquaSol is a water filtration company that uses plant materials to perform filtration.
EisnerAmper is the fifteenth largest accounting firm in the United States. Mr. Faugno, with over 25 years of experience, is the Partner–in–Charge of the firm’s Federal Government Contracting Group, which assists clients in complying with the government accounting regulations related to their federal contracts/grants. Mr. Herdman is a Senior Accountant in the Accounting Services Department, specifically the firm’s Federal Government Contracting Group. His specialized expertise in this area includes accounting system compliance and incurred cost submissions.
